The Never Setting Suns

November 6, 2008

My two roommates, Corey and Chris, and our other friend, Griffin, have recently formed a band under the name The Never Setting Suns.  I was a little skeptical at first just because of the success rate of small friend bands and I wasn’t sure how good they were.  That is until yesterday.  Yesterday they started trying to record their first album.  They got a few songs down including a video shot by yours truly.  The link to the video is the above link.  When I got there, the guys weren’t even playing yet and they were supposed to have been playing for like an hour.  They were all in Griffin’s brother’s toys trying to dress up as funny as they could to make the video seem cooler.  Chris was decked out in full rodeo gear.  He always wanted to be a cowboy so he thought if this video ever made it huge, he was going to make sure he looked like a cowboy.  Griffin had all kinds of Speed Racer toys out including a helmet.  He played the whole video with a speed racer helmet on.  Funny, completely unnecessary, but funny.  Corey couldn’t figure out what to be.  He just had some of Griffin’s mom’s old clothes and things out and was just trying to look as ridiculous as possible.

Here is a link to the band’s myspace if you are more interested.  http://www.myspace.com/theneversettingsuns

Turpin YoungLife

November 4, 2008

As you may know from reading past posts, I am a younglife leader at Turpin High School.  Over the past year its been very slow and averaging only around 5-8 people each week for our weekly bible study with the kids.  That was until 4 weeks ago.  Four weeks ago we had 11 and that was awesome, it was our biggest campaigners ever.  The week after that we had 20! Then we had a week off, and last night there was 29 kids there! Some kids neither me or Celina had ever seen or talked too.  There was one kid there named Sam who walked in in a big black trench coat, gothic shoes, and some makeup on.  I’m not sure how or why he came but he did.  I talked to him for a long time after campaigners was over.  He heard about it at school and wanted some people to hang out with.  Most of the time people ignore  him and think he’s weird but when he came to hang out with us he said he felt like people really wanted him there.  He had a hapyy bunny shirt on too that was just hilarious.  Thats how I broke the ice with him was telling him how awesome his shirt was.  We all hung out in the Johnson’s basement for awhile but as soon as we saw it starting to get out of hand, we started moving everyone out.  The sign that it was getting out of hand was that the girls started getting into Mrs. Johnsons makeup and things and trying to put them on the guys.  We rounded up all that stuff and put it back.  It was a great night and I can’t wait for Thursday. . . Bigger and Better!

Campaigners Last Night

October 7, 2008

We had our biggest campaigners we have ever had last night.  There were 11 kids there, 4 girls and 7 guys.  Two of the guys that came are the two guys I am working the hardest to try to get to come around.  I love them.  They are awesome.  They in no way even act like they think they are Christians and that is why I was so happy for them to come.  We don’t want to get nothing but church kids to come around.  Yes, I love them and they can use this for their ministry but we have come for those who need us the most.  The kids who will never step into a church their whole life without some sort of help.  It is Spirit week at their high school and today is pirate day so they were all talking about what kind of pirate costume  they were going to be wearing the next day.  Some of their ideas were great, like dressing up as all the lost boys from Peter Pan.  Wednesday is favorite literary character day so Turner, who is only about 5′2″ is going to dress up like curious george.  Which is just an excuse to act like a monkey all day.  I told him I would go with him to school as the man in the yellow hat and just walk him from class to class.  I think thursday is going to be like comic book or cartoon day.  Jake, who is a little odd, has all kinds of stuff for different cartoons and comics and things of that nature.  He is set and I think he is going to lend out some of his things to some of the other kids to wear so they can all be looking the same.  It was a ton of fun, lots of good conversation and I cannot wait till next week to see if we can replicate the same results.

Addicted to Ebay

September 25, 2008

I may be becoming addicted to shopping on ebay.  I bought one thing a few weeks ago for the first time.  It was an Ipod FM transmitter for my car.  It only worked for about a day but I was already hooked.  It was so exciting to get something in the mail that I bid on.  Since then I have only bought one thing but I have bid on a ton of things.  The only thing I actually won was something I was going to give to Jessie as a wedding present but it may have to wait till her bday because they haven’t showed up in the mail yet.  My mom uses ebay occasionally too.  She has this thing for shea butter products and they are really expensive in the department stores.  She has been able to find it on ebay a few times for really cheap or in larger quantities and she’s gone ahead and bid and won it.  Which is more than you can say about most of my things.  The thing I’m on the look out for now is any kind of eagle globe and anchor jewelry for my grandpa.  His birthday is coming up and he will be 75.  He used to be a marine and takes alot of pride in it and the eagle globe and anchor is the marine logo.  If I got him a nice ring or pendant or something like that, he would really really like it.  I don’t think I’m addicted. . . yet.

Going out of town again

September 23, 2008

I’m going out of town again this weekend and I am really excited, again. I do think I go out of town more than most people my age but that is the beauty of being young and unattached to anything.  This weekend is a leader retreat weekend for the other leaders in my area.  I am trying to figure out what to bring and stuff like that.  The girls are the ones who always go over the top though  The last few times we’ve done this they planned some secret surprise for us and threw us a party or something.  They probably already have all their stuff they are going to need for whatever the surprise is this year.  Zack’s parents are going to be out of town too so we had to take his dog to a kennel yesterday and it will be there for about a week. For some reason his parents wanted us to go all the way to one of the dayton dog kennels instead of somewhere close.  They are very over protective of their dog and I guess this is this best one around or something. We could see it from the high way.  It had a giant neon sign flashing dog bone guiding our way.  It was really fancy.  I think I would like to live there for a week.  The dogs had climate controled rooms and everything.  That was an interesting adventure.  I can’t wait for the weekend now though.  This week is going so slow already.

New Roommate

September 18, 2008

We got a new roommate on Sunday.  He is awesome.  He just graduated from Amelia and is going to NKU as a music major.  He was in Younglife and Amelia so he knows all of us.  He wants to be a leader too so he will come to leadership and stuff like that with us for awhile then eventually get placed at a school.  Matt is a really cool guy and me and him have been friends before he moved in which made it easy.  He does have his quirks.  Our cabinet is now full of sencha tea.  Matt cannot function in the morning with out that stuff.  Corey loves him because Corey always tried to buy stuff like that but no one else liked it and now he has Matt to share it with.  He also has this strange mild obsession with thomas the tank engine.  He even has the Thomas the Tank bedding.  His comforter has a giant train head staring at you on it. Its kinda creepy.  I think a bunch of us are going to throw him a welcome to the house-party.  We will get all the appropriate decorations and stuff like that.  I think he already loves living here.  We were bugging him about moving in for awhile and he never seemed interested then all of a sudden he wanted to move in.  It’s going to be awesome and I cannot wait to see who moves in next.

Mom’s birthday

September 11, 2008

My mom’s birthday was a few days ago and I had no idea what to do for it.  She also didn’t expect me to do much because I am pretty much broke.  I went to Macy’s looking to maybe find her favorite makeup.  My sister told me she especially like dermablend cosmetics.  I spent about 5 minutes looking for it and gave up.  I felt like I spoke a foreign language.  So the make up was out.  So I wanted to get her something funny instead.  So I want looking and found a few things that would make her laugh.  Those just didn’t feel right either because she really wouldn’t use them, just laugh for one day and be done with it.  So as funny as it would be, they would essentially go to waste especially if she didn’t really laugh.  One of the things that would have made her laugh were a pair of goth boots that I foud at hot topic.  She would have laughed really hard and told her friends about it but she would never have worn them and they would have cost me a little more than I wanted to spend.  Then I figured the thing mom wants the most is just some quality with me.  So I took her out to breakfast and paid for it and we just sat and talked about life for a few hours.  It was really fun and I went high class on the breakfast-Bob Evans.  Thats right.

Something big. . .

September 11, 2008

I love spending time in prayer and just sitting with God.  A couple days ago I was sitting at my house after reading for awhile. I was just praying that God make what he wants for me clear and that I can be strong enough to do it.  Then I overwhelmingly got a feeling that I need to do one thing specifically.  You know like when you wake up in the morning and you know you get to do something awesome later in the evening and your whole day you are looking forward to doing that thing.  Kind of like the feeling you have on Christmas eve, that really soon you get to open those presents.  It was really weird but awesome.  I have to do or take action on something big soon, something big is coming and God is preparing me for it.

The Dunes.

September 9, 2008

Last weekend I went up to the sand dunes in Indiana on Lake Michigan.  We camped out all weekend about 10mins from the dunes and drove there every day.  It was really awesome.  There were 7 un married guys, 3 unmarried girls, and 2 married couples for a grand total of 14 people.  I wanted to bring my family’s dog with us. Everyone else thought that would be a bad idea.  It would give us something else to play with and mess around with and who doesn’t want a dog around. I had to get him away from the way my mom spoils him too.  But no one else wanted the dog for the weekend so he stayed in Cincy.  The beach front was amazing.  The second beach we went to was the better of the two.  It wasn’t nearly as crowded and there were much high dunes to jump off of.  One of the girls who came with us is extremely sun sensitive.  She forgot her special uv protection clothing at the camp site when we went so she made her self a little fort of towels and chairs.  It was actually quite nice in there and she still had a great time.  She can be out in the sun for about half hour periods before she starts feeling burnt.   The only snag was when we were about to leave, Joe lost his ring.  It was a military ring his grandpa gave him and it meant alot to him.  At some point he lost it so we spent a few hours looking for it and finally found it at the campsite under a tent.  There are more stories coming from the weekend but this is all for now.  It was awesome

Wierd Dream

August 28, 2008

I had a very strange dream last night.  It took place at a place like Top Gun or some other military base that had fighter jets.  But we weren’t in the military.  My friends and I were in charge and a bunch of the high school guys that we hang out with were there too.  Weirdest part: we didn’t fly jets, we flew mattresses.  What?! Yes mattresses.  I’m not sure what that was all about.  I remember landing and walking up to the head leader Ryan and asking if I could borrow his car.  He was telling a group of guys about his organic cotton clothing he had on and how much it let him breathe like in that one Seinfeld episode when George gets the Yankees cotton uniforms.  They were playing some game on the ground with those little wooden peices that hold wooden chairs together and stuff like that. I didn’t have enough time to ask what game they were playing.  Once I got his keys I went out to his “car” which was hit mattress and me and one of my turpin guys hopped on and we took off.  Ryan’s mattress had a barney plush toy hanging off the end front of it like a hood ornament.  I remember taking off and thinking if I could pull off a loop then I woke up.  It was a strange dream. I’m not sure why I had this dream but it if you know what it means, please let me know.
